New Jersey Choral Society Seeks Artistic Director/ Conductor


New Jersey Choral Society, an exceptional 60-70 voice auditioned volunteer choir in Northeastern NJ/suburbs of New York City is seeking a dynamic and accomplished Artistic Director/Conductor.


Currently in its 42nd season, New Jersey Choral Society’s mission is to:


● Enrich the lives of those with whom we come into contact through our performances, be it celebrating the wonders of the holidays, experiencing pop culture or sharing classical masterpieces, through both imaginative and traditional programming.
● Engage and expose the members of our community, both the young and the young at heart, to the expression and emotion that music brings to each of our lives; and
● Encourage and provide our members with opportunities to grow their individual and collective artistic talents. NJCS performs holiday concerts in December, a Pops concert in March (which may focus on Broadway, American standards, jazz, opera, rock and iconic composers) and a late spring concert of a major choral masterpiece or a variety of classical selections.


Minimum Qualifications:
The qualified candidate will be approachable, collaborate effectively, and understand the realities and challenges of working with an all-volunteer chorus.
A qualified candidate will also have:
● Minimum of a masters degree in music education, choral conducting or similar degree.
● Minimum of 5 years choral conducting experience with adult choruses.


If a potential candidate is lacking some of the requirements above, relevant experience may be considered in evaluating the potential candidate.


Duties and Responsibilities:
● Develop the programming for the concert season; review and approval by the Board of Trustees.
● Working with the VP of Artistic Development, create the season schedule listing all auditions, rehearsals, retreats, concert week, the three concert programs and any other program activities required during the season.
● Work within the budget approved by the Board of Trustees for each concert cycle
● Prepare the program notes for each concert based on the agreed to timelines.
● Attend the regularly scheduled Board meetings, providing status updates and input.
● Rehearsals: The Artistic Director is required to conduct weekly rehearsals which start in September and run through early to mid-June. Rehearsals are scheduled from 7:30 to 10:00 pm on Tuesdays.
● Retreats: The Artistic Director is required to conduct one retreat per concert program (three retreats in total). Retreats are held on Saturdays and usually run for approximately six hours with a break for lunch.
● Sectionals: Conducting and/or arranging for sectionals as needed.
● Concert Week: During concert weeks, there are generally three dress rehearsals from 7:00 to 10:00 pm, with one or two of those three nights usually including instrumentalists and/or soloists.
● Concerts: The Artistic Director is responsible for conducting all performances for each concert program. The schedule for the 2024/2025 season currently has three Holiday performances in December, two Pops performances in March and one Masterworks performance in June.
● Auditioning and selecting new members in conjunction with the VP of Artistic Development and the Board.
● Conducting concert readiness checks and voice checks, as necessary


Application Procedure:
Salary range $20,000 - $30,000, commensurate with experience
